20 best iPad games

Yes, pinball plays well on the iPad.

(Credit:Screenshot by David Carnoy/CNET)

Updated: 06/18/2010

Wondering what games to buy for your newiPad? Well, this early in the product's life, it's actually pretty hard to sort the really good stuff from the just decent stuff, particularly with the prices for many games being so much higher than theiriPhone counterparts. But we took a shot at putting together a list of top titles that we feel meet the criteria for a good iPad game.

Just what does make a good iPad game? We debated it for a while and narrowed it down to these four factors:

Ergonomics (are gameplay and control scheme well-suited to the iPad?)Show-off quotient (does it impress people when you demo it for them?)Uniqueness (though many iPad games play well as upconverted, higher-resolution versions of their iPhone predecessors, we respect new iPad-exclusive games)Value (some of the best iPad games currently carry high price tags, but we also tried to include titles we believed were simply a good value).

With that in mind, here are our favorites so far, displayed in alphabetical order. Feel free to sound off with your own picks (or criticize our choices). With new games coming out almost daily, we will be updating this list frequently and taking your suggestions to heart. As more games are released, we may also expand the list to include more titles and, hopefully, surface some hidden gems.

ViewSonic NexTV VMP75 network media player

ViewSonic is more often than not associated with LCD monitors which are easy on the pocket, alongside HDTVs which fall under the cheaper, more affordable range that do not skimp on quality. Well, the company is back this time round with a device that will surely make people do a doule take – after all, what they are offering has nothing to do with displaying moving images on a display on your work space or living room, but it comes in the form of the NexTV VMP75 network media player instead. This network media player is touted to deliver the ultimate entertainment experience to consumers’ HDTVs with Full HD 1080p playback from external storage devices, with the option to stream media from home networks and the Internet.

One of the available Internet options on the NexTV VMP75 network media player would be Netflix, which is a leading online movie subscription service that allows members to instantly watch thousands of movies and TV episodes that are streamed directly to your living room. Of course, this would mean having a decent Internet connection so that your movies and TV shows will not be buffered constantly with constant pauses in between.

Apart from that, the NexTV VMP75 also sports the iMedia feature that offers a whole world of Internet entertainment to HDTVs, complete with quick and easy links to media content a host of other websites such as YouTube, Live365.com, SHOUTcast Radio, Flickr and more. It also sports an integrated web browser that lets you surf the Internet without missing your desktop, and you can also set up your favorite RSS feeds to have instant news and world events of interest delivered straight to your living room (or wherever you decide to place the NexTV VMP75 network media player). Social networking sites including Twitter and Facebook are also supported, letting you know what they’re up to anytime, anywhere. Want to shar your latest photo collection with friends who drop by? Stick in an USB memory stick or hard drive via its USB port – that’ll do just fine. No idea on pricing or availability though.

Sony Ericsson Cedar takes on a greener approach

Companies these days want to be seen to do their part when it comes to keeping the environment around us green, and every slight effort is trumpeted so that their efforts are not lost on anybody. Most recently, we have Sony Ericsson touting their GreenHeart initiative which sees products that fall under the GreenHeart movement to be degrees “greener” than regular ones, with the Sony Ericsson Cedar being the latest cellphone to fall under that category. This handset will target those who want to stay connected to family and friends through phone calls, text messages and social networking sites without breaking the bank while keeping their consciences clear that the phone itself has some green features along the way to leave a better planet for our kids.

With a name like the Sony Ericsson Cedar, you will be able to enjoy an easy-to-use social networking experience with the Widget Manager 2.0, where this application lets you access a bevy of social networking sites through its stand-by screen. Not only that, the Cedar is also a joy to hold and look at, thanks to its human curvature design which is now a consistent feature across the Sony Ericsson portfolio. Other features and specifications are as follows :-

At E3: Wiretape, a super-thin cable you can paint

(Credit:Josh Lowensohn / CNET)

LOS ANGELES--At a show that's as large as it gets for video games, in a corner of E3 the was a product designed to be hidden from sight entirely.

Hitech Innovation's Wiretape, which the company claims is the world's thinnest wire at 0.16 millimeters, has been designed to de-clutter the usual mess of wires that can stretch down from high-mounted televisions, or across rooms.

It works like a roll of tape, running as long as it's needed before consumers can cut it with a pair of scissors. Then, the loose ends can be fed into a small box that has whatever type of connection is needed.

Apple to sell unlocked iPhone 4 in Canada

Unlocked? We want one too!

(Credit:James Martin/CNET)

All right, this really isn't fair. Though you've never liked it,iPhone users in the United States have accepted that your counterparts in other countries can use Apple's handset on multiple carriers and (better yet) get an unlocked device. When those countries are far away--say across an ocean--it's not so bad, but when you have to see it right next door then it's really tough to watch.

I speak, of course, of our Canadian friends who will join customers in the United Kingdom in having the opportunity to buy the iPhone 4 completely unlocked and contract-free. That's right, they'll be able to use it with any GSM carrier, whether they're north of the border or traveling abroad. Sure, there's the matter of using a micro-SIM card, but you can get creative with scissors and use a normal SIM.

Pricing for an unlocked iPhone 4 isn't avaialble just yet, but you can get an unlocked 8GB iPhone 3GS for $549 Canadian dollars (around $534). True, you can buy an iPhone without a contract in the United States, but that handset will come securely locked to AT&T.

Samsung adds Galaxy 3 and Galaxy 5 to Android arsenal

Samsung Galaxy 3

(Credit:Samsung)

The stream of new Samsung handset continues with this week's announcement of the Galaxy 3 and Galaxy 5. Currently being shown off at CommunicAsia, both handsets are slated for European and Asian markets starting next month. The i5800 Galaxy 3 is aimed at the younger, social networking market and the i5500 Galaxy 5 should appeal to the style-conscious customers. Both feature Android 2.1 although I expect updates to 2.2 Froyo before too long.

Looking very similar to a Corby handset, the Samsung Galaxy 3 has a 3.2" (240x400) WQVGA TFT touch display in addition to a very average 3.0-megapixel camera with autofocus. The phone has 170MB of on-board storage in addition to a 1GB microSD card. One area where the Galaxy 3 shines, however, is its variety of connectivity options. Users have the luxury of connecting via 3G (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps), Bluetooth v3.0, or Wi-Fi 802.11 (b/g/n).

Whereas the Galaxy 3 only resembles a Corby phone, the Samsung Galaxy 5 actually gets branded as "Corby Smartphone". With a slightly smaller form factor, the handset has a 2.8-inch QVGA TFT touch screen, but nearly identical specs to the Galaxy 3.

If adding expandable memory to your handset is a concern, it's worth pointing out that the Galaxy 5 is reportedly supports up to 16GB while the Galaxy 3 handles up to 32GB cards. Also, the Galaxy 5 has a 1200mAh battery while the Galaxy 3 has a 1500mAh power source. I suspect that Samsung is trying to keep the costs down for both phone being that neither features AMOLED or Super AMOLED displays.

Audi A8 wins award for Google Earth integration

Audi's new navigation system uses Google Earth to show rich maps and detailed information on destinations.

(Credit:Audi)

As if handwriting recognition and audio by Bang & Olufsen weren't enough to make us drool over the upcoming 2011 Audi A8, the company showed off Google Earth integration with the navigation system. Previewed at this year's CES, the completed system won the award for Best Embedded Telematics Navigation Product at the 2010 Telematics conference in Detroit.

Taking advantage of the NVidia graphics processor in the A8's navigation system, along with thecar's 3G data connection, drivers can see their destinations and surroundings in rich topographical clarity. Detailed information on specific destinations includes photographs.

Audi has also introduced fuzzy search for finding points of interest, something long missing from navigation systems. Instead of typing a specific name for a business, the A8 uses Google Local Search to find businesses and other locations based on general search terms.

The 2011 Audi A8 goes on sale in the U.S. by the end of the year, but the Google Earth navigation system won't be available until early 2011.

iSnapMe helps you take pics of yourself

Anyone that’s attempted to take a picture of themselves knows how many gray hairs it’s capable of causing.  When you’re always trying to take pictures of you and  a friend when no one else is around it can be a little tricky and apparently it’s worse for those of you using an iPhone.  Of course I wouldn’t know, I swear I’m not bitter.  Well this quick little mirror trick makes it possible to take pictures without causing you nearly as much stress.

It just suctions onto the back of your iPhone, then using a mirror you’ll be able to keep track of how well you’re doing.  Now they do say it’ll still take a little practice to get used to the method, but once you’ve got it down you’ll be taking great pictures every single time.  You can watch a video through the manufacturer that gives you an idea on how it works.  To pick one up it’ll cost you $19.95.

Hands on with Kung-Fu Live from Virtual Air Guitar Company

Kung-Fu Live takes action games to a whole new level as the player literally is fighting.

Kung-Fu Live makes use of the Playstation Eye in order to put the player in the game environment. The setting looks like something from the eighties video game Double Dragon, as bad street thugs come after you in some back alley.

In order to defeat them, you don’t use any type of “special move” or combination of buttons. All you need to do is punch, kick, or jump when they get within range. I have a video after the jump so you can see it in action for yourself.

I found that playing it was quite a workout, and it was clearly the most energy-draining game since the Wii-Fit. I sort of had a hard time doing this one attack that involves spreading your hands to make an energy beam. It is also weird to fight enemies to the sides of you when you are constantly looking forward. The man who demonstrated it to me was really kicking butt though.

I think that Kung-Fu Live is an example of a trend in video games that encourage the player to get up off of the couch and get a move on. Microsoft has the Kinect, and both Nintendo and Sony have their versions of motion-controllers since the release of the Move.

Kung-Fu Live is coming to the Playstation Network this fall, but the photo that you see here is not an official poster for it. That is something the guys at Virtual Air Guitar whipped up for me while I was at E3, and that is me doing the kicking in the picture. Yes, I know my leg does not match up with the blur.

Buffalo Technology has placed on the table a world’s first – we’re talking about the MediaStation 12x External USB 3.0 Blu-ray Writer here, where it is the first external USB 3.0 Blu-ray writer of its kind for the commercial market at the moment. Buffalo has more or less been associated with network devices as well as direct attached solutions, so it is no surprise to see a Blu-ray writer being introduced this time round. What you get with the MediaStation 12x External USB 3.0 Blu-ray Writer would be unsurpassed 12x Blu-ray write speeds that is not confined to a drive bay in your computer or notebook, making it possible to tote around wherever you are without missing a beat. The MediaStation 12x External USB 3.0 Blu-ray Writer has been touted to be the ideal device for users who want optimal playback and writing performance of Blu-ray discs, DVDs, or CDs on their PCs or notebooks, and even for archiving purposes. Its main point would be to connect through USB 3.0 of course, but just in case your computer has not been upgraded or updated to feature such a port, being stuck in the USB 2.0 era, it is backwards compatible as well, going about its work without batting an eyelid (although you will need to wait it out longer when copying discs or data).

Each purchase comes with the CyberLink Blu-ray 3D Ready Media Suite that will enable full HD and Blu-ray 3D playback and upgrades consumers’ in-home movie experience with 3D movie playback or HD upscaling for standard DVD discs and video files. Belkin Conserve monitors appliance energy usage

It’s tricky knowing just how much energy each of your devices uses.  You can make a guess at it, but sometimes it helps a whole lot more to know for sure.  Besides, it might help motivate you and your family to start unplugging items when they’re not in use.  This small gadget monitors how much electricity is consumed and the watts, so you’ll know where your major energy sucking appliances are located.

You just plug in your gadget of choice into the Belkin monitor and it’ll keep track.  Not only that, but with this you’ll be able to compare how much energy that expensive light bulb is actually saving.  It’ll also let you know the actual dollar cost of keeping that device operating.  You can purchase this one for $29.99 through Amazon.  Although it’s not released just yet, so you’ll have to wait a little while for it to be shipped.

Belkin Conserve Valet

Most of the time to charge my cell I’ll just plug it into the charger and leave it all night.  It’s just the easiest way to do things, even if it’s not the most intelligent as far as energy use goes.  Those of you that charge a lot at night, but want to conserve energy should check out this Belkin gadget.  It’ll still allow for you to sleep while it’s charging, but it won’t drain power like many other chargers.

Most of us already have heard that most chargers will continue to suck power, whether or not your phone is plugged into the charger.  Well this is a USB charging station that automatically shuts down once the gadgets using the valet are fully charged.  Plus it has the added benefit of helping you cut down on cords.  You can purchase this for $39.99.  Although as of now this is in the pre-order stage of things.

Upgrade Your Door Security with Peephole Security Viewer

The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said that if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you. He may not have meant it but the same philosophy applies with peepholes. As you peek at your front door’s peephole, something or someone on the other end may also be staring at you. It may be your deranged ex, credit collector, annoying neighbors, Girl Scout cookie vendor or a familiar resident of Camp Crystal Lake. No matter who or what it is, you don’t want them to know that you are looking at them through the peephole.

The problem with the conventional peephole is that the person outside can be alerted by your presence when you look through the glass opening and that’s bad for your privacy; especially if you don’t want to be disturbed or give off your presence. A new and ingenious simple gadget can turn your peeping hole into a one-way viewer

TV Flash Lamp hides TV

Sometimes it’s nice not to have all of your technology on display.  I’m a big one that I really don’t want to be able to see the TV all the time in my bedroom, but I like having one in there for rare occasions when I want to lay down and watch TV.  Thankfully one designer has created a creative way to hide your small flat panel TV.  Instead of stashing it in an armoire, you could hide it inside of this Flash Lamp.
Normally it’ll look like just a chunky lamp, with a working light and everything.  Then it can easily transform to reveal your LCD TV.  It can hide one of up to 23 inches in size.  Then after you’re finished it just slides back into place and can be used as a regular lamp.  This is a design by Denis Santachiara done for Roche Bobois.  Sadly, there isn’t much information on how to purchase it, but you could always contact the designer to see if it is available for purchase.

Kube MP3 Player

Everyone has an iPod anymore, which makes it far less cool than when Apple products were only used by a very small elite group. Those of you that are just absolutely sick and tired of blending in, now Think Geek has a solution for you.  Toss out that iPod and pick up yourself the Kube.  The Kube is a tiny little MP3 player that’ll hold quite a few of your songs.

Sure, it won’t show the songs that are coming up, nor does it really let you skip around, but that’s not much worse than having an itty bitty iPod Shuffle.  The whole thing only stands all of 1 inch tall and weighs 18 grams.  Once the built-in Lithium Polymer battery is all charged it is capable of playing continuously for 6 hours.  You can store up to 8,000 songs on the included 2GB Micro SD card.  It also comes with earphones, an SD adapter, a USB Cable and a handy little manual.  You can purchase it for $34.99 through Think Geek.

Teknines Nine Millimeter Earphones

Gun and/or suicide fanatics can now have the perfect set of earphones.  These earphones are made to look like a pair of 9MM bullets.  Now having a fake bullet jammed in your ear my be perceived as somewhat disturbing, but at least they’re not working bullets.  Besides, they have a pretty shiny gold exterior to give them a much more classy look.

Not only do they look gold, they are plated in actual 18K gold.  They don’t screw around when it comes  to their fake bullets.  These are sold by Munitio, but they’re not being released just yet.  Sadly since these are incredibly nice gold noise canceling earphones, they’re not what I’d call cheap.  Once they’re released later this month they’ll go for $250.

Genos CYCLOPS design finalized and ready to hit production

Genos’ final designs for the CYCLOPS are at last complete, where the product is more than ready for production. This unique prototype design was invented using Play Dough, and a couple of patents were filed earlier this year. The product is now ready and being prepared to hit the market in time for the upcoming frantic Christmas season, where it is touted to be the most ergonomically correct controller on the market. Meant to fit perfectly between two hands, it was meant to cater for a keyboard for the GenosTV Cable box, but will instead be sold as a universal remote control for TVs and other consumer electronic devices. Good move, we say – after all, you would end up with a wider target market which should add up the figures in the bottom line. A version is being made for video game consoles as well at point of publishing, so new Xbox 360 owners ought to be pleased to look forward to a new controller in the near future. No idea on pricing as at press time though.

The new blue camera and red camera will boast an elegant rose design of the original white KODAK Wedding Single Use Camera, where the latter itself has turned out to be a rather popular accessory for wedding receptions, engagement parties and bridal showers. As for the bachelorette version of the Single Use Camera, it will feature a “girls’ night out” design with a teal color scheme that goes well with other fun bachelorette party accessories. The Knot Signature Camera, which was obviously designed by The Knot, is a sophisticated, clean design of silver-gray ivy on a white background.

How about the picture quality, you ask? Kodak’s Wedding and Bachelorette Single Use Cameras and The Knot Forever Floral camera use KODAK 800 speed film for sharp pictures and feature a manual flash with 4 to 11.5 foot flash range, retailing for $5.99 a pop. Bear in mind that that isn’t the final price, as it is a special introductory price instead. For those who want to have a great big day with family and friends, why not give the KODAK Wedding Single Use Camera a go?

Airship Hotel: Lighter than air, but is still a heavy concept

I always wanted to see a world that we dreamed of before the airplane was invented. A world where airships fill the skies like artificial clouds, and we can live on them as long as we fill them with helium.

We’ve reported about similar concepts before with this self-sustaining blimps, the Aircruise, and the Boeing Skyhook. Yeah, I don’t think that this design, known as Airship Traveling, will ever come to pass unless some rich guy just really wants it. Man, does that say something about technological innovation, or what?

The Airship hotel apparently can stay aloft thanks to the power of the sun. I don’t know how that can be, honestly. I mean, how can solar power keep something aloft that is lighter than air? Considering how solar power is pretty inefficient these days, I wonder how it can somehow make helium. Oh man, it better not be using hydrogen. “Does the Hindenburg ring any bells?”

Still, you have to admire this Airship hotel, just for sheer dream value alone. You will note that the artist decided to put this Airship hotel hovering over what looks like Arizona. I guess that would be quite breathtaking view. By the way, how do the guests check into the Airship hotel, with a helicopter?

Lentek Automatic Pet Dish

One of the down sides of having a pet is that it’s a whole lot harder to ditch town for a week without having a friendly neighbor that you know and trust.  Should you be lacking in the trusty neighbor department, thankfully there are electronics to help you replace people.  This dish will make sure that your cat or dog stays well fed, but not overfed either.

It’s a better option than just dumping extra food in a dish if you want to regulate how much they eat per day.  The 6-day pet dish has an accurate timer and if there happens to be resistance on the feeder it will stop the lid rotation.  That way if your pet happens to be finishing up it won’t catch their paw in the dish somehow.  It can feed the animal in intervals of 6, 12 or 24 hours.  Each compartment can hold about 2/3 cup of dry food, so it’s best for a smaller animal.  You can purchase one of these dishes for $31.54 through Amazon.

High Heel Speakers

If you’re a woman who seriously loves her heels or just any general person with a serious foot fetish, now you can have a pair of speakers to show off your real love in the world.  These bright red shoes are sure to attract all sorts of attention, so you’d better be ready to come out of the closet with your foot or shoe loving tendencies.

You may think it’s incredibly strange for anyone to create speakers like this, much less have anyone buy them, but there’s something you should know.  The speakers are Japanese, nuff said.  The USB speakers have an output of 3W x 2ch.  Should you be highly interested in getting a pair, they’re not the cheapest USB speakers out there.  They cost 4480 Yen or about $55, plus the amount of shipping it costs to get them outside of Japan.

PlayStation Move motion controller now official at E3

E3 is the mecca for video game news, and it is a no brainer for companies to roll out their latest and greatest efforts in glitzy press conferences to keep hardcore gamers happy. Well, Sony has upped the ante with their latest announcement of the PlayStation Move motion controller at E3 this year, bringing motion control capability to their PS3 console. It is rather ironic that they have jumped aboard the motion control bandwagon after pooh poohing Nintendo’s efforts last time when the Wii was launched, dubbing those “waggle controls”. Guess they have seen the light and realized that gaming has certainly gotten a whole lot more immersive these days with a little help from motion controls, so why not pair that feature up with stunning visuals that are only available on the Sony PS3?

Those living in Europe as well as other PAL territories, alongside Asian countries will be able to pick up the PlayStation Move controller for 39.99 Euros. As for most of the folks reading this who are living in North America, it will hit the market this coming September 19th for $49.99, while our friends living in the Land of the Rising Sun will have to wait until October 21 to get their hands on it for 3,980 yen inclusive of tax. The PlayStation Move navigation controller is a one-handed controller which can be used alongside the motion controller for intuitive navigation of in-game characters and objects, will also hit the market on the same day in each region for 29.99 Euros, $29.99 and 2,980 yen, respectively. That should leave you ample time to save up for these accessories, don’t you think so?

There will also be a PlayStation Move bundle that comprises of a PlayStation Move motion controller, PlayStation Eye camera, Sports Champions Blu-ray disc game and PlayStation Move demo disc for a shade under $100, while those who are more adventurous can check out the PlayStation 3 Sports Champion Move Bundle that will see a PS3 system thrown into the mix alongside a PlayStation Move motion controller, PlayStation Eye Camera, Sports Champions Blu-ray game and PlayStation Move game demo disc, all going for $399.99 Of course, those who prefer to get the accessories individually are more than welcome with the PlayStation Eye camera being sold separately for $39.99.

DIY Stargate looks awesome

Are you a huge fan of the Stargate sci-fi series? Apparently, this dad is, which is why he decided to spend some quality time with his son to build up a replica Stargate using nothing but their hands and a whole lot of heart from scratch. There were no blueprints to refer to – only one’s imagination, and the materials required included wood, coat hangers, tubing and styrofoam. To make it all the more realistic, the gate will actually spin through and through, although it won’t transport you to a distant galaxy or universe, while there is absolutely no chance of hostiles coming through your way either.

Casio targets gamers with the Green Slim line projector at E3 2010

Casio was clearly targeting gamers as they showed off their Green Slim Projector at E3. They even went so far as to describe it as “The Ultimate Gaming Experience”.

The Green Slim Projector boasts that it uses no mercury lamp, so the user doesn’t have to replace its light source any time soon. In place of the traditional projector lamp is the power of lasers, which last ten times longer than a Casio mercury lamp.

It is also quite slim, at 1.7 inches thick. Since I am at E3, I saw the reception myself, and I thought I was looking at an HDTV on the wall instead of a projection. While I was there, I happened to see a smaller version of this projector in a glass display. Someone who was manning the booth told me that “we’re not supposed to talk about that”.

I’m guessing that smaller one will have more advanced features. However, this one has 2X Optical Zoom, and is able to do PC Presentations by plugging in a thumb drive. It is available with XGA (1024 x 768) and WXGA (1280 x 800) native resolution, and it is capable of displaying HD inputs including 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. It is also equipped with an HDMI terminal in order to transmit digital audio and video with only one cable and connect directly to game systems with an HDMI output.

The Green Slim line from Casio are available at B&H and Best Buy, for a price of about $799-$1,099.

Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation)

Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation)

Not as thick as pictures show it and still feels great. Resembling a calculator from the 1970 kindle brings back memories. It is much lighter than a book and extremelly comfortable to hold. The large, gray panel on the back covering the battery and SD-card memory slot is rubberized for better grip and engraved with letters and symbols from different alphabet throughout the ages, a subtle reference to the tablets that held the first written words.Although most users of the Kindle will use it as an ebook and nothing else, the device is so full of possibilities that you’d be a fool not to take advantage of them.Kindle can be used for GPS, wireless connectivity, mp3 player, and so much more.

In addition to being a book reader, the Kindle has some experimental features. One is a limited Web browser customized for the device with some preselected bookmarks including Amazon.com (in case you want to buy a digital camera instead of a book, which you can do just fine from the main Kindle shopping page), Wikipedia, Google, BBC News, Yahoo Finance, Weather Underground, and the Yellow Pages.

To sum up Kindle has a lot of potencial and can be a valuable gadget. It has so many uses that its literally the swiss-knife of Hi-tech trends. The only drawback is its average price which could drive away  buyers having money problems.

Apple iPod Apple iPod classic 160 GB Black (7th Generation) NEWEST MODEL

Apple iPod classic 160 GB Black (7th Generation) NEWEST MODEL

The new 160GB iPod  is by far Apples best iPod , and out of all of the iPods that I have, this is my favorite.

First, the capacity of this iPod is simply unbeatable. I've yet to see another portable media player that can match the iPod Classic in capacity. I have a huge music library, and it's nice to be able to carry every song that I own on my person at all times. What's more, thanks to the iPod Classic's capacity, I also have room to carry a few videos with me, and some of my photos. If you don't like having to pick which songs to load onto your portable media player, the iPod Classic is the way to go.

The second thing that I love about this iPod can be summed up in two words: it works. The 160GB iPod Classic that was introduced in 2007 was extremely buggy, had a non-responsive Clickwheel on many units, crashed frequently, and required a hit-and-miss firmware update to stop the hard drive from spinning even when the device was "off," which often lead to dead batteries. All of these problems left the 2007 160GB iPod Classic warming shelves and earning it the infamous "honor" of being the "worst selling iPod ever," according to Apple. I'm pleased to say that the new 160GB iPod Classic released earlier this month has virtually none of these problems. While it's true that many of these issues were fixed with last year's iPod Classic, there hasn't been a truly functional 160GB model until now. There's no "spinning hard drive bug," the Clickwheel is incredibly responsive, and the device isn't crash-prone. To put it bluntly, this is the iPod that Apple should've released in 2007.

Finally, I would highly recommend this product both thumbs up from me. I don't like the iPod Nano; it's too small for my hands, and the screen is too small for my eyes. The iPod Classic is an excellent portable media player and has an excellent interface. To put things in perspective, the 2009 160GB iPod Classic costs $70 dollars more than a 16GB iPod Nano, and $150 dollars less than a 64GB iPod Touch. All in all, I highly recommend this product.

Hands on with Power Gig: Rise of the SixString at E3 2010

We’ve reported on Power Gig: Rise of the SixString before, and I finally had a chance to try out their SixString guitar controller for myself at E3 in LA.

I can honestly say that Power Gig from Seven45 Studios raises the bar for the music game. If you’ve played Rock Band or Guitar Hero, than you know how you must push a button and flick a “strum bar” in order to match patterns on the screen. Power Gig replaces all the buttons with actual guitar strings.

The Power Gig SixString Guitar is still marked with the colored frets on the neck, so all you are really doing is holding down a string instead of pushing a button. I believe that I was on the easy level, and I only hit one fret during the song. I found even that difficult to get used to, and part of playing the song includes strumming while holding down no string frets, something that other guitar music games don’t have. I wonder if more difficult levels include actual guitar chords. Find out about the drums after the jump.

Power Gig also has a microphone and drums. The drums are not designed with the realism of the guitar and are quite unusual. The drumsticks are electrical, and powered by batteries. The player does not strike anything physical with them, but simply waves the stick above a sensor. By the way, the sticks have to be held a certain way (there is a specially marked place for the thumb) or they will not work.

In summary, I will say that Power Gig is a more advanced version of the music game genre, but it could easily be more advanced. You could be playing real instruments, for example.
